Reading Intervention

Students reading booksOur goal at Kersey Creek is to promote the development of strategic readers who are able to think critically, analyze and solve problems collaboratively, and clearly articulate their thinking through writing and speaking. Above all, we wish to support our students as they lead full and meaningful lives while participating in their communities and society.

At Kersey Creek, we believe that students learn best when given opportunities to engage in authentic literacy experiences. We use a balanced literacy approach that includes a reader’s workshop, writer’s workshop, and explicit phonics, spelling and word study instruction. Through classroom observations and ongoing assessments, teachers, reading specialists, and administrators are able to collect information about students’ strengths and areas of growth. This information is then used to plan instruction that best supports the learners’ needs, using a balance of whole group, small group, and individual instruction.

Mrs. Sanders works with students, teachers, and families to help students achieve literacy goals and discover the joys of reading and writing. In addition to working with small groups of students, Mrs. Sanders collaborates with teachers and provides resources and ongoing professional development to support and enrich literacy instruction in the classroom.

For students who need additional support, Mrs.Sanders, as well as our other interventionists, provides supplementary instruction that best meets the needs of the students. Below are some of the intervention options available at Kersey Creek.

Reading Interventions Offered at KCES

Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)

LLI is a short-term intervention that provides daily, intensive, small group instruction, which supplements classroom literacy teaching. During LLI lessons, students read new and familiar texts, work with words, and participate in writing activities.

Literacy Groups through SOL Interventionists

SOL tutors work alongside the reading specialist to provide supplemental instruction for students 2 days a week. The instruction may be focused on a specific area of need, such as spelling, fluency or writing, or possibly a second dose of guided reading in a small group setting.
