A family’s guide to PBS and the house system at Kersey Creek Elementary School.

What Is My Role As A Parent?

  • Talk to your child about what they did today to follow our school-wide expectations.
  • Ask about our school expectations and what they mean.
  • Remind your child that although the house system encourages some “friendly competition” we are still one family!

House Points

House points can be given to students for going “above and beyond”, exemplifying the “Comet traits”, or doing something to benefit the greater good.

  • Students can earn house points individually or when the whole class is working together as a team.
    • If the whole class receives a house point, then each house would individually earn a house point.
  • Students can earn points across all settings (classroom, lunch, resource, speech, bus, etc.).
  • Students can also earn points for their house through participation in special house challenges throughout the year and attending school events.
  • Each year, there is a house champion that is determined by who earned the most points throughout the entire school year.

Weekly Winner

The house scoring the most points for the previous week, will be recognized each Monday on the announcements and the entire school will say the chant for that House.

What Is PBIS?

Positive behavior supports (PBS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social and academic success. PBS is a research and evidenced-based program that is supported by the Virginia Department of Education through Virginia’s Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS).

What Is The House System?

Kersey Creek will continue to implement PBS, or positive behavior supports, as part of our school culture. We began the house system, inspired by the Ron Clark Academy in 2022. We are six houses, one family, meaning all our students are expected to demonstrate each character trait and show respect for each house. The house system makes our large student body seem smaller as students feel a sense of belonging and pride. It weaves seamlessly into PBS as it creates a positive school environment that fosters social and academic success for all. PBS focuses on building-wide expectations and positive incentives. We use a common language to teach and model our expectations across all school settings. PBS supports character growth, promotes responsibility, and helps all students learn important life lessons.

Our Six School-Wide Expectations

  • Kindness, Empathy, and Integrity

More About The House System

At the beginning of each year, we hold a fun sorting ceremony where new students and kindergarten students learn their house. Returning students remain in their house for the duration of their time at Kersey. Here are some fun activities that we do throughout the year to bring our one family together:

  • House Spirit Day (every Friday - Wear shirt, house colors)
  • Quarterly House Pep Rallies
  • Family House Unity Breakfasts
